"The care of children is a common bond producing a camaraderie that crosses departmental boundaries. Residents are an important and integral part of the care team for the children and their families." -- Dr. Martin, Director

Introduction by the Director of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine at Seattle Children's

Residents from the University of Washington Department of Anesthesiology spend 3 months of their CA2 (R3) year and 1 month of their CA3 (R4) year at Seattle Children's. Seattle Children's provides comprehensive tertiary care and education in the management of infants, children, and adolescents for Washington, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho. All faculty have completed a pediatric anesthesia fellowship or equivalent. The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at Seattle Children's is a division of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Washington; our 30 plus faculty members hold full-time academic appointments. The Seattle Children's department delivers over 18,000 anesthetics annually to children ranging from premature newborns to adolescents. All surgical subspecialties are represented, including solid organ transplantation. The Department also administrates and staffs the pain management service. Subsets of our faculty are trained and experienced in pediatric critical care medicine and pediatric pain management. Some anesthesia residents rotate through the PICU, and all residents are involved in the pain management service during their O.R. months.

Resident education is a top priority for our faculty, and stands alongside the other parts of our mission, which include patient care, research, and child advocacy. We take pride in the quality of our resident lecture series, which is given two mornings a week throughout the 3-month rotation. Lectures are designed to present the resident with a core curriculum of pediatric anesthesia topics, and are supplemented with a syllabus of written material. In the O.R., residents are supervised by faculty who are trained and experienced in pediatric anesthesia; many faculty members are board-certified in both pediatrics and anesthesiology. At most, faculty supervise two operating rooms, and they are present to teach fiberoptic techniques and placement of regional anesthetics and invasive intravascular monitors. During the rotation, the resident manages the full range of pediatric ages and surgical diagnoses. For those who are interested in specialty training, the Department offers a 1- to 3-year fellowship in pediatric anesthesia.

Seattle Children's is a fun place to work. The care of children is a common bond producing a camaraderie that crosses departmental boundaries. Residents are an important and integral part of the care team for the children and their families. As a result, the rotation at Seattle Children's has traditionally been very popular among anesthesia residents. The ultimate compliment comes when we are able to attract a resident into further subspecialty training as an entry into a career in pediatric anesthesia.
